I used to despise electronic music as a whole in the 90s. My friend in 98 showed me some old Prodigy records and some jungle and I was like yeah this shit is tight but the people still look like idiots. Fastforward and all these germans on this video make their music with an ipod or some shit. The sounds are way more varied and so are the scenes. Combo norteno y Guadalajara. Gotta say, GDL was a dope place and I barely scratched the surface. Chilled on NYE at an exchance student party. Pure wildness. Met some kids chilling downtown and ended up going out to the bar with them. That and the girls are MTL - NYC level hot. I done bit my fist a lot.

Chapultapec boulevard in Guadalajara is a cool spot. In the middle of the street there's like a park lane where a bunch of kids skate and chill. Took some pics.

In 2003 I was hitch hiking through the wilds of very British Columbia and I missed Miles Between Us' last show. They played another show with Mental a few months later but it wasn't the same as a true last show. Now I'm in Mexico and Buried Inside have played their final show. You might not know these bands but both were very important in my musical upbringing. As a younger boy when I discovered the local hardcore scene it really blew my mind and set me on the path I'm on today. Looking for any cultural nook or cranny I can find. I remember thinking I liked heavy music before seeing B.I. I had no clue on how heavy one could be. B.I. was great cause as my tastes became more refined I saw new things in songs I had been listening to for years. BURIED INSIDE R.I.P. MCNABB R.I.P. Mexicoland has been treating me pretty alright. Still a bummer to not be in Scotland but whatever. The land of rotten oranges has some interesting sights (coming soon). Had 4 films on backlog. Let's look back on the summer shall we?

Went to go bet on horses with some NBAs but I was kinda disappointed. I was hoping to see more people at the end of their ropes yelling at their jockey to win while waving those litter papers around. More like depressing old couples watching in complete sadness haha. My boy JU made some serious coin though. Most of the riders were French. Gambling is our playground.

When Ottawa wanted to get modern french areas really suffered, a lot of folk were displaced. This is from across King Edward which cut la basse ville in half and created 2 very different communities as well as bringing heavy truck traffic to the area. Notice the lone building of what was once a dense city block teeming with life.

Remnants of French can still be seen..... at the homeless shelter. My friend works there and says that there is a disproportionate amount of francos living there and only one french speaking employee (him). The root of many problems apparently.

Went to the Dom with Myriam. Had no camera my gut just gave me death like cramps until I went and purchased an overpriced Kodak. I always buy bargain brand PRO CLICK. No good pics to be had at the Dom and I felt like an ass for dropping a Laurier on a disposable. Then as we walk towards Mello's we see a big ass commotion. Either a good beef session or an entertaining homeless man. My hypotheses were both proven to be wrong, it was a psychotic djembe fest, obviously. It was filled to the brim with ed hardy style douches. A good portion of these douches were of middle-eastern origin so they were getting their folk on. Combined with drunk as fuck whites getting in touch with themselves. It was pure paganism, a cult to Dionysus. These are the visual records. I finished my night in la Basse Ville at the illest house in the city (pics for lower town are not yet developed however) . Here are some visual documents.

Oh yeah, we were going to Quiznos. Post Quizno's my man was done for the day and decided to sleep it off on the human rights monument. We wrapped up the rest of his sub and sent him homeward.

Huge backlog of pictures waiting... Bad blog week man gotta start steady tumbling again. So what I'm going to do is put you on to the newest subgenre I'm hyping the shit out of. DRAG/WITCH HOUSE/HAUNTED HOUSE. Essentially it's kinda like what Houston brought to the table with screwed and chopped remixes but just taken to the next level. A drag song will tend to slow down pop songs with darker lyrics that you don't notice when it's sped up. Other dark sounds are added to flesh it out. Had a pretty wild weekend. Was in a play and I hope/think I didn't embarrass myself. I think I lost an almost finished single use which REALLY pisses me off. That being said I found some pics on my hard drive from the national improv tournament.

Starting with portraits from the Université Laval team. Maybe the club I have played with the most over the years on the circuit. This dude has been around as long as me and he's really good.

The guy on the right won most sympathetic player. Nice guy. The woman was also on the historic Laval team.

K, so when I was 18 I saved up grocery store clerk money and went on a life changing adventure in (very) British Columbia. So many wild fucking stories. Some of my friends don't believe I made friends with an abandoned dog with a bandanna round it's neck living in the wilderness with other stray canines. Anyways so when I score the old Olympus there's a film in it but it's old as fuck. I thought it went bad but tried to get it developed anyways. Yup turns out I had some unreleased pics from my B.C. trip. No dogz but some wild shit.

No bandanna dogs but this is a shitty picture of at least 2 killer whales. You can see the fin of one splashing and the streak of another one underwater to the right of the frame. We were on a B.C. ferry and we got to be closer than those tourist trap whale observer boats. Whales became a very major interest of mine due to this trip.

My whale journey was not complete. My friend and travel mate Alex Poisson rented a motorcycle. Riding a tandem bike with him in Stanley Park was fucking terrifying. So I went and checked an imax movie on whales that blew my mind. This is in Victoria. A city that I would describe as a slightly nicer version of Ottawa.

When we were staying out in the woods on some gypsy/hippie campground/commune we saw these fire fighters spraying trees with chemical gunk to prevent fire. That summer was super dry and everything was yellow. All our campfires were illegal as fuck.

During the island part of our trip we made friends with an old dude who let us live in a trailer on his property. Shit was adjacent to a body of water. This is Alex and I being joke artistic... I like it!

Speaking of set up pictures.... I have no fucking clue what we were trying to communicate in this picture. The guitar was purchased in a shitty fucking pawn shop in the downtown east side of Vancouver. I wonder who it was originally stolen from?

So I just got back from la Coupe Universitaire d'Improvisation aka the national championship for francophone improvisation at the university level. It was an alright time, it was my 5th and due to all my audition stuff I wasn't really as psyched for it as my previous tournaments. That being said I was really zen and the little I read about sport psychology has really helped me on stage. We didn't win by enough points to make the semi finals but the only team we lost to were the eventual champions. All in all really good time even though I had to go all the way to the god damn maritimes to do it, an almost free trip made up for it though. My pictures here could have been way better had I gotten closer to the games. Lesson learned I guess.

LicUQAM's bench. They are consistently one/the best team on the university circuit. The girl on the edge I thought was especially good. There are unfortunately less girls who play than guys. I think because this activity attracts young loud guys and younger artistic girls are turned off at an early age. A lot of really good female players end up being like tom boys. the LicUQAM's captain however has a much more feminine style of play and thoroughly dominated the tournament. I wish there were more players like her.

At Laval they actually have multiple leagues. This is the younger of the leagues but they were great to play with.

Got like 6 films getting developped AS WE SPEAK. Some on various disposables (they are like snowflakes!) and I my old man gave me the old family point and shoot. One of the most sucessful point and shoots of all time from a business point of view. Checking some stuff taken with it on flickr and I'm excited to see how my stuff turned out... get ready.

Seriously, i'm just getting started on this hustle. Wait till my 5000 hours come in.... Wait till I get some non dollar store equipment... Eventual free trips to Milan are pretty much 100% guaranteed at this point.

Man I got so many pictures on back log again. It's an addictive hobby.

So to go in contrast with my positivity I figure I would post some dark ass videos. Both stolen from far superior (but not for long) blogs!

N.1 is Yelawolf a white rapper from Alabama who I have really high hopes for. Poverty is poverty, not where you from it's where yo at type of shit. This video is one of the best new hip hop videos I have seen in awhile. Commented on O mnikrom's/Jeanbart's blog (where I stole this) that he would have been disgustingly rich had he been on the scene 10 years ago. His mixtape is really worth the D/L.

I have not said anything about the Haitian earthquake yet. The dust has settled from a media frenzy point of view so I figure now is a good time to remind people that the disaster is nowhere near over. This disaster started the day Haïti got independence and that France, the U.S.A, the U.K. and Germany got together and figured out a way they could get paid. France imposed a reparation for all their slave business that evaporated and the latter countries "helped" Haïti out with loans. This was the only way to end a full naval embargo. This disgusting debt went on well into the 20th century well after slavery had become illegal. The West was all too happy to be little slum lords though. Haitian troops defeated the French AND the British. Colonial powers would never let them gain the upper hand again. So when we say "Haiti is the poorest country in the hemisphere" that's not an accident. Nothing in society is an accident it got put there by people and structures. Now Haïti is hit with the worst possible natural disaster and we owe it to them to do anything we can to help and we are still be in debt to them once everything is cleaned up.

I have posted a lot of Haitian music on my blog in the past. Not the folklore stuff. Us whites love to see people in their cute ethnic dress prancing around being happy. I like to see what kids REALLY like. Art that can emancipate. So I'm gonna throw up some more Kréol rap. If you can understand French and you listen closely you will pick up some lines. The beats have a real darkness that I have yet to hear in any other form of hip-hop. Haitians were my first friends from other countries and these times are really hard on them. One thing that I know from history and from my life growing up is that Haitians are tough as fucking nails. Great to party with but even greater to have on your side when shit hits the fan. But you can tell n.4 is one of the best players in the region. She's 18 and her mind is always working at 10000% during a game. This pic was taken while the other team was on. She never turns off and that's why she's the Lebron of the game.

WARNING SAPPY DIARY POST READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

I just got in to my n.1 choice of theatre school, a Royal conservatory. This might seem like a big deal or a little deal to you.

I spent the last 2 years of my life in what I now see as clinical depression. When my granny in Scotland died I was devastated it hit me at the worst possible time. I had started a master’s program I really didn’t want to do and I felt like art was dead for me. I had just broken up with the only girl who has ever loved me after almost 4 years. I was drinking all the time. Sitting down on a Glasgow street corner I looked up at Scotland’s national conservatory and I was jealous of these students who had everything where I had nothing.

My granny was my n.1 fan in everything I did no matter what. No matter what. Especially the arts. She never ever got mad at me. She always took my side and she sobbed every time I drove away to the airport. No exceptions. She survived world war 2 and she was a life long political activist for Scottish independence. She was my hero.

During my M.A. I got dumped hard by my new chick. My thesis got all fucked up and I had to keep on piling the extra semesters. I put on a bunch of weight. All my friends started growing up, moving on and settling down. Some kids where there for me and I will never forget that but I felt fucking lonely. I felt like I was never going to finish my degree and that I would have to drop out. That people would think I was an idiot. The idea of going to this school in Scotland became my new lofty goal of what I would do AFTER the degree... an AFTER I never ever thought would come. But I kept on thinking of what my granny would tell me but I still had trouble believing her.

After the pyrrhic victory of finishing my M.A. no one seemed to give a shit. The audition process became real and daunting. I could see the doubt in people’s eyes. People would ask me why I wasn't just getting a real job. It was really starting to get to me. I almost didn’t get ino 3^rd year acting at uni (I was thinking of NYC during my audition in Ottawa). I kept joking that I was going to New York so my dreams could die. So when everything went great in NYC I saw that alone as vindication, I didn’t suck. Gained some swagger at the least. When I found out I got in this morning and everybody left the house. I said it out loud “Iain tu l’as faite” then I thought of my Gran and I sobbed tears of joy for the first time of my life. Like the athletes when they win the cup, like fighters when they get the belt. I know what they feel like now. I couldn’t stop thinking that the only person who ever believed in me was right. Everyone else was wrong. I think part of why I cried was cause she couldn’t see me do it... But I know that by me going to this school and TRULY believing in myself for the first my life, that’s how she lives. She lived through worse shit than I ever will, so I have no excuses. I have to live for her. She lives every time I create, every time I laugh, every time I work hard but more importantly every time I believe. Anything is possible.

p.s if I can do it, so can you.

The main thing that motivates me to take pictures is a concept I call "secret worlds". Areas of everyday life that lie sort of under the surface. The Dom is a public place but many deem it dirty or unworthy. Documenting what no one documents interests me. Another secret world is a place called "Les Chinois". My good bro Djani introduced me to this 24 hour internet café. I don't know what it's really called but we call it Les Chinois aka The Chinese. Now that might sound racist but the place is run by Chinese people. Normally that wouldn't be a big deal but these guys are REALLY Chinese. It's like entering a portal into China. Communication is so tough it's hard to actually give them my money. Anyways this place is grungy as fuck and is filled with weird people when you dip in for some 3am gaming. I go here mainly when I have no cash to buy the new game I want. The basement is filled with pan-Asians who fucking go crazy while playing Warcraft 3 and really weird borderline goths. Sometimes it gets awkward... and I fucking love it. I will take more pics of this place in the future. Here are few to give you an idea of how dungeon like this place is. I still don't know how to get my fellow geeks to say yes to picture taking....

This couple was funny. Dude was not having me... really didn't want the pic taken. Girl was feelin your boy BBC though. Check those eyes... Moral of the story is: hold on tight but not too tight kids.

Hate what they are asked to do but I try not to hate the dude behind the badge. A job is a job in this cold world. I tried to get them to look serious "Just pretend you saw me write my name on a train!" Lady was able to stop laughing dude couldn't get it together.
