Youth Anthems ACTIVATE.
K, one of the main things I hate is the folklorisation of non anglophone cultures. Like if your from Botswana the only shit that western people will even think of checking out is their traditional music heavily anchored into the past. It just commercializes their ethno-cultural history and doesn't really push youngins to see their native tongue as being something vital that can thrive in a globalized world. I think the main goal of art is to go forward. We never hear of non anglo artists doing modern music in their own tongue. It's very rare for one to bust through and the french and spanish have been pretty much the only other languages to ever even register blips on the anglo-western music radar. Anyways. TEKI LATEX is quickly becoming one of the best french rappers lyrically and he has always been on the forefront of shit in terms of beats. Today we have a video with him and Swedish rapper ALEXIS WEAK. This might be the first time I have heard a Swede speak his language in a song. I give you a really well done swedish/french electro-ish rap video.
ALEXIS WEAK FEAT TEKI LATEX - INNE PA KLUBBEN
Next up is a generic lo-fi indie party punk band MIKA MIKO. They are pretty much all-girl so I'm liking it. Gotta support females playing instruments! The video is also pretty cool. I also want to add that pitchfork tv's new streaming video tech suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.
MIKA MIKO - I GOT A LOT (NEW NEW NEW)
Since I was primed on a new Teki Tek video I decided to hit up a dope CUIZINIER/TEKI LATEX joint featuring the one and only GENEAVEN HEATHEN. He also has one of the best god damn blogs in the universe called SENSITIVE TOUCHING.

No me gustan ternos, mi estilo es moderno
PART 2 OF OUR SPECIAL YOUTH-CEMBER POST ON SWEDISH INVASION.
Let's start the second post like we started the first one, with Dennis Lyxzén, the lead singer of REFUSED who went on to form true swedish invasion band THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY. A garagy band that went along the lines of The Hives and The Strokes except they were ultra political and less guitar driven. They played an apparently brilliant show in Ottawa that I missed cause my mom didn't let me go. That show was originally going to be with The Hives but they got signed to Warner like 2 weeks before and dropped off the tour. Bah, I give you their biggest song SMASH IT UP.
To following groupe is an all girl band called SAHARA HOTNIGHTS. Man when I first heard them and found out they were swedish I pictured the hottest blond girls ever in my head. Kindof a bummer to see they were only "regular" girls. Played some good tunez like ON TOP OF YOUR WORLD.
Finally we have a great proto-swedish invasion band that went on to have resurgence due to the wave, THE CARDIGANS. Just good straight up rock and roll and a blond singin'. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaah. (jeezy voice).
To wrap it all up we need a dose of Norwegian bitterness. Sweden's crusty evil little brother. I give you the dark lordz of all anus TURBONEGRO - DENIM DEMON. "The band's name raised some eyebrows, and for that reason their first releases were sometimes branded TRBNGR, perhaps to preclude backlash against what some consider to be a racist name. However, the band's stated motivations are anti-racist, trying to change the attitude of racism and nationalism perceived as prevalent in parts of Scandinavia. Founding member Thomas Seltzer once said, "A turbonegro is a large, well-equipped, armed black male in a fast car, out for vengeance. We are his prophets.""
You're welcome.

My only addiction has to do with the female species
YOUTHCEMBER CONTINUES. Today I'm going to hit you with a two part post. The theme is SWEDISH INVASION. The dominance of the blondes during the early to mid 2000s and there might be a special appearance from some Norwegian kids. NOOF please. Get in the YOUTH-MAS spirit and enjoy music from one of the cleanest countries in the world, I heard Swedes never grow pubic hair.
Let's start with some proto-swedish invasion. REFUSED were never part of that wave of music but they set the stage for destroying the Abba image we had of Swedes. They also made one of the most important hardcore records in history. I never saw them live but seeing Ottawa's best band Buried Inside cover them at Halloween a few years ago was pretty badass. Their big hit, NEW NOISE. Love it or love it.
THE HIVES were a pretty big band for me at the end of my high school life. My friend shoplifted their album VENI VEDI VICIOUS for me in grade 12 at the west edmonton mall. I listened to it every day when I got home and did exercise on stationary bike (although I 'm pudgy now I'm still proud of having dropped almost a 100 pounds in a few months back then). I will however be playing the song WALK IDIOT WALK which is off a later album. Why you ask? because when I was doing a bus trip accross Scotland with my then girlfriend she had a cd player with The Hives on it. We were sharing the earphones and I kept forcing her to repeat this song. Good times.
We conclude part 1 with THE SOUNDS - SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. One of the last videos I had to watch Musiqueplus 24/7 to figure out who was singing this song. Hogging the television just to get closure onto what song was in my goddamn head. The singer is very swedish and very hot. Woo. She also described american Nu-Metal as Pizza Rock (cause they looked like they ate too much pizza). Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaah. (read that like it was young jeezy saying it).

Chances are that I might
Tonight is improvisation at the university of ottawa. This year I am retired as a player and I'm coaching a team. Today is the equivalent to a scouting combine as I plan out my draft picks. I have decided to have a coaching alter ego, I am calling myself Bobby Knight. I would like to think we both have the same fire in our portly bellies. Today's theme is cool girls making music RIGHT NOW.
When my grandmother passed away a year ago last Thursday (I will do a post about her passing in the coming weeks) I went over to Scotland for the funeral. One of the only positives is that music television is A LOT better in the U.K. they have like 15 channels and random acts get blown up pretty easy. The current artist being hyped while I was there was KATE NASH. Her songs were catchy as fuck. Her songs kind of reminded me of Dashboard Confessional (which is deep in the guilty pleasure vault). I was hesitant of hyping her back here. I was at Zaphod's this winter and her song Foundations came on and I yelped out that I loved it. I was really embarrassed but at the same time it felt like a giant weight came off my chest. I came out of the Kate Nash closet. I like Kate Nash. I said it. Deal with her most recent video PUMPKIN SOUP. I want a dumpy GF so bad.
Now I have always loved the shit out of Sweden. Can that country be any better? They are like the goddamned Japan of the western world. I bet that they shit out gilk (gold+silk combo). Anyways back in 2002-2003 there was Swedish invasion. 5 years later the "next big thing" coming out of Sweden is LYKKE LI. Going the Annie route of making pop music but bypassing the normal commercial avenues. Bjorn's (of Peter Bjorn and John) production seems what a high fashion magazine would sound like if it were music (if that makes any effing sense). If I had limitless resources I would get her to front toronto acid hardcore band Fucked Up. A modern day Velvet Underground and Nico. Shit would be off the chain. song is LITTLE BIT
Finally we have a brand spanking new video. Brooklyn's VIVIAN GIRLS. I've been listening to a lot of Jesus and Mary Chain these days as well as being an eternal fan of surf guitar and this comes along and slaps me in the mouth, WOW. I'm putting their re-issued self titled album on my records to be downloaded A.S.A.P. list. Not only is this song (TELL THE WORLD) blowing me away (perfect to listen to when I get back from getting liquid at the bars) but the video is AMAZING. Pure B-Movie/ David Lynch ish without trying too hard. Get wise to this shit for real children.
