I went to go see a the legendary GZA this weekend. His live show is one of the best I've seen. No hypeman and the lyrics came out perfect. Played all the best songs totally grimy and NYC, great stuff. Anyways he called out security and some guy filmed it. A great video from a great show!

i'm running this red light
Tonight I think I'm gonna get drunk at the movie theatre and go to the dominion tavern. If you've seen me get my lean on this passed year you know that I tend to channel Tracy Morgan's energy. I feel like going to open mic stand up and just pretending to be him.

the maurice richard of hip hop
This Sunday I saw NOTORIOUS with my homegirl Margaux. If you have followed the blog a bit you know I am huuuuuuuuge biggie fan. The first rapper I got into as a youngin (grade 6) he had accessible singles that appealed to me as a child but it was also his image that gave me a lot of confidence as an overweight kid. I know it sounds cheesy but he inspired me to have pride in the way I look and not take shit from nobody. As I grew older I started to get more into hip hop and started to analyze the lyrics as well as notice that newer hip hop while good could not hold a candle to the perfection that was biggie. As an ultra fan I gotta say that I was really happy with the movie. Jamal "Gravy" Woolard nails the role and it almost made me feel like he was alive again which was pretty cool. He should drop rapping and try to act for a living I think (although he will probably get type casted pretty bad). The music blasted through the theatre surround sound was great and I was lip syncing the lyrics the whole time. One thing that bummed me out though was this it was a true story and that he had to die again which reminds me a lot of reading history books about New France. No matter how many times you experience the story the ending is always the same, we lose. Not gonna lie, I had tears in my eyes at least twice. One scene between Big and his mom talking on the phone from jail and the funeral procession. He died at age 24. Such a young age to die but at the same time it made me think what the fuck have I accomplished in my life? If a guy with all the chips stacked against him since birth can follow his dreams it would be a crime for a relatively well off kid like myself to not at least try. Hopefully in 2010 I will be in another country trying to give it a real go. Check the movie out.

if you censor this you're a pussy
WARNING GUEST POST SIGNIFICANT CHANCES OF AWESOMNESS.
Yo, you already know who it is. It's ya boy Young Lozi also known as Big Eagle P in some smokier circles. Now I know all you guys are wondering "What the fuck is Big Eagle doing on this shit? I know Big Baby Campbell ain't sittin on this type of loot". Look, I did this shit for free because BBC is a dude I fuck with... a BSC OG, the blackest white dude I know. I'm up in here to help a dude out. This blog is severely lacking in real shit. Consider this post Real Shitology 101. Ain't no fucking "Oh look at me, I can't play an instrument but I do a lot of coke and my faggy circuit-bending hipster boyfriend made me a shitty microphone out of a phone receiver so people won't notice that I sing worse than that bitch on APTN who sings with aboriginal puppets in the morning.". Real shit only. Lets do this.
First off we have Shabazz the Disciple with Crime Saga. An original member of Sunz of Man and probably my favorite Wu-Tang affiliated artist. This little jammy was originally released as a single in '95 and was later featured on his debut full length The Book of Shabazz in 2003. This album is one of the darkest, grimiest, rawest, realest hip hop albums ever released. Fuck you if you disagree.
Up next is Neglect with Good for Nothing. The most depressed band NYHC has ever produced. They did the damn thing from '91 to '95. This video was shot in Germany. Real as fuck. Check it.
Last but not least I need to give a shout out to SMACK DVD. The realest hip hop DVD in the game. This is one of my favorite videos they've featured. It's also Big Baby Campbell's current jammy. Look Nigga You Food by Stack Bundles. SQUAAAAAAAAAAD UP!
BONUS! This one goes out to anyone who doesn't think Redman is real as fuck:

Promise you anything, I'll never lie
Haven't posted in awhile. Going to see the Habs and the Bills this weekend. It's going to be pretty intense. Today's post is big on videos and short on text. Essentially it's about how New York City was hip-hop and all this hate on this soulja boy nonsense is getting us nowhere. Rap sales are going down and it's a good thing. Big beat gritty yet thoughtful NYC hip-hop might get a chance and being relevant again. Today we have classic NAS giving a shout out to everybody, BIGGIE freestyling on a Bed-Stuy corner, BIG L repping harlem, Strong Island's finest RAKIM on one of his less classic tracks that's still better than 98% of kids on the come up, Queens' own PRODIGY of Mobb Deep on some new mixtape shit and finally some Brooklyn bullshit with JOELL ORTIZ who I think if signed to the correcte label could be our saviour. Enjoy.

To a new paradise
Man late edition. I got my haircut tonight my mullet is gone as well as 5 pounds of hair. This evening I go all franco on your asses. Common theme is Montréal but with one clip from Marseilles because they could not be ignored.
Number one. Today's weather was pure will smith summertime. A rarity in Ottawa this so called summer. So I wanted to throw you a summer jam from the 514-450. Granted it came out in May 2007 but the video is just TOO good. Hell even rival blogger Perez Hilton featured them which is pretty cool (no homo). OMNIKROM TROP BANANE. Listen carefully and you will hear a Mr Freeze reference, the ultimate summer snack.
Number two. Another electro rap/ synth pop song from MTL. NUMÉRO # the song is called HIT POP (maybe what electro rap should be called?). The singer is from France but the DJ is from Montréal. They operate in Québec. Pretty rad song so even if it didn't have a video I put it on.
Number three. We get into Mount REAL shit, REAL CITY WHAT. Into french rap proper, none of this electro shit. My favorite francophone rapper of all time SANS PRESSION. He's my second favorite rapper after Biggie. That's saying a lot coming from a head like me. Sans Pression rhymes like a lot of kids at my school spoke. It's a dialect that many francos couldn't understand. He always had a huge place in our cd players. Anyways the song is NUMÉRO 1. The video features pro mma fighters and boxers from Québec. The best "Canadian" fighters are french. GSP came out to this song in his last title defense. Also French rappers in Canada sell more records than English-Canadian rappers (sorry kardinal). Which proves my theory I developed in Toronto, WE AIN'T WHITE, WE FRENCH. He also shout outs the Democratic Republic of Congo in this song... Heavy.
Man I can't even call this bonus cause it's so good. These guys are the ones that exploded French rap. Chuck D told me France was the second country of hip hop. Mc Solaar was the originator but IAM took it to the next level. A big time crew from Marseilles, a tough as nails city where they speak with a messed up accent. These guys came out with a song that featured WU TANG. It made kids "go shit, Wu Tang is rapping alongside french dudes." It really validated the language for me. Anyways this was a really long time ago and French rap is huge now. This guy Booba is ultra popular, he's a parisian 50 cent. K-maro is like a Lebanese usher. It got REAL commercial (the electro shit is a breath of fresh air yet it's also poked at in this song). IAM came out recently with a song called COUPE LE CAKE. The video is hilarious and they really don't take themselves seriously but they are telling these kids "we gave this to you, we gave you a piece of the cake. Remember that we were wolves and you are being kitty cats and it's time that you make an effort for the younger generations." Wow I spoke too much, you HAVE to watch this video!

And I could almost hear you shout down to me
I had a long long weekend. I repped my union CUPE local 2020 by partying pretty hard. I got kicked out of the dirty oak which is borderline embarassing. Whatever it was past last call. My ex gf Myriam is supposed to guestpost in the blog but until then I will give you an easy to digest WU TANG WEEKEND WRAP UP.
Up first is one of the best videos of all time. GHOSTFACE+ speed racer. Until O.D.B. recently blew my mind, Ghost was my favorite wu member. dig DAYTONA 500.
Next up we have GZA the genius. He came out with a new album recently which is apparently good lyrically but with kinda shitty beats. This song has a sweet beat. Swallow the LIQUID SWORDS.
WU TANG DA MYSTERY OF CHESSBOXING. My favorite wu group song. This is what it's all about. the odb meth ghost stretch is nuts. Jacques Cousteau can't get this low.
Bonus bonus bonus
GHOSTFACE again this time with BACK LIKE THAT. A breakup theme song... sigh. I don't let women near my digital scales no more, this song taught me that.
No dense descriptions today... wu tang speaks for itself though.

He might blow up and kill this man
The word ghetto gets thrown around a lot and I dislike that. White girls from the G.T.A. use it like they should use birth control. I'm not going to say I'm more familiar with ghettoness then anybody else but I think I have a pretty good definition. It's shit that is fucking crazy and would not make sense to anybody outside of ghetto area or mentality but is completely normal inside of said area and mentality. Now I had the opportunity to go to a "cosmopolitan" (see I didn't use the word ghetto!) high school where I got to meet an interesting cast of characters. Whenever we would have freestyle hip hop battles there was this obese kid who would come on the mic and just say so-so-so-somalia (like the no-no-no-notorious in the duran duran/biggie song) for like 2 minutes straight. Once during a math test I saw him out the window sprinting like an obese cheetah running away from the cops (who finally got him and beat him up), I proceeded to write the test. People wouldn't even crowd around the window for stuff like this. But what takes the cake was a time I was hanging out at the blair bus station and I met my Ethiopian friend who I think had been kicked out of school at this point with a vietnamese/cambodian thug. I was like "what's up?" and the south east asian dude starts mime-ing shit. Ethiopia goes "oh you don't understand?" and start translating the hood charades of this mute thug. No one knows sign language on the street so he would just act out what he wanted to say. He also tried to sell me pills. Anyways, just to say that a G-Unit video isn't ghetto, today you are going to see some third world shit.
Ok first up is the highest budget of the artists. MAVADO and BUSY SIGNAL 2 bigtime jamaican dancehall singers. I discovered them when I won an x rated dancehall compilation in a dice game (seriously, the pot was like 90$, cds and chocolate bars). I 4-5-6ed that shit. So all summer 2006 and 2007 I listened to the most vulgar music ever, dancehall. I was at a house party with a reggae theme and the dj was playing awesome dancehall and the hippie who was running it got mad and said "I hired you to play fucking reggae man what is this shit?"... In his mind I think reggae exclusively consisted of Bob Marley and Bedouin Soundcrap. I give you BADMAN PLACE. The song is about badmen and the places they reside at.
Next we have AFRIKAN BOY. You might know him from M.I.A.'s album Kala. He is a Nigerian now living in London and he raps almost unintelligibly about how 5 dollars is a fucking lot in Africa. His flow is amazing. I hate how white people are all about djembes and feeling at one with the rythm of the dark continent. Fuck that, this is the real shit. The song has no title, it's a random youtube freestyle from his room.
Finally we have a group I recently discovered, BARIKAD CREW from Haïti. This is the first Haitian hip hop not from NYC or Montréal I have ever heard. I am so happy they got over calypso and merengue. They sing in créole a language you can sort of understand if you speak French, key word being SORT OF. 3 members of the group recently died in a horrible car crash/electrocution and people mourned big time all over the country. These guys are the be all end all KINGS of créole hip hop. Some members were arrested and it nearly started a riot. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. I truly believe that BARIKAD CREW could start a coup if they wanted to. If you were reading my reggaeton post you can see this song employs a modified dem bow beat. From what I gather the song is about pencils, it's called TAY KREYON. Check it out for real.
Colonized countries have more than old traditional music to offer us you orientalist bitches.

Now I think I finally understand
My recent posts have been so feminine I have actually started menstruating. Not only have I spent 25$ on coffee crisp chocolate bars I have bloodied a perfectly good pair of business casual khakis. The doctor told me the only cure for pussyness is to man the fuck up, BLOG STYLE. So this is it I'm tooling up and ready to make the name Youth Anthems ring out in the Baltimore high rise projects. Our theme today is punch you in the motherfucking face hip hop from the late 90's and early 2000s. 3 of the 4 songs on today's post were featured on my championship run at the local Ottawa Ipod Battle. Shout out to Team Intifada DJs.
Let's start with the SUPERTHUG by NOREAGA. Came out in 1998 but I really got into it in 1999/2000 aka grade 10. An early track to be produced by The Neptunes. Back then I had no idea who The Neptunes were but I really loved all their singles without knowing the common thread of chad and pharrelian production. I used to listen to this on my DIAMOND RIO aka the first mp3 player ever released. It had like 25 megabytes of room and ate batteries like the Japanese eat hot dogs at Coney Island. The chorus of just yelling what is pure genius.
Another 1998 song is RUFF RYDERS ANTHEM by DMX. This was a song that I would watch muchmusic/musiqueplus every waking second just for a chance to hear it. It's dark and hell is hot was my favorite album in grade 9. My friends and I bootlegged copies in my highschool with photocopied covers printed on blue paper. Shit was my intro to crime. DMX might sort of suck these days but I can't see how you can't like this song. That whole album was soooo good at the time. My 13-14 year old brain could not imagine music getting any better than this. Which is pretty hilarious in retrospect. You about to get earl simmoned.
Now for this last song I want you to stop reading if you are pregnant, suffering from heart problems or if you're a bitch. This is some LIVE shit. Probably the best "punch you in the face" song in the history of hip hop. Especially the version with the Funkmaster Flex intro. M.O.P.'s ANTE UP. The be all end all of getting riled the fuck up. I remember reading a rolling stone review of the song and they said it "wasn't scary like a fight it was scary like war." the year 2000 version of Iain was like "whoa, rolling stone just read my mind". M.O.P. stands for MASH OUT POSSE which was the same name of the gang that Lil Fame and Bill Danze were part of. They are from Brownsville, Brooklyn which is where John Gotti was a streetgang member as a teenager. Nothing gets more real than this. Also there's a line in the song that goes "hats, food, booze, essentials, credentials" Shout out to Dan Hooligan who I went to visit in T.O. to buy a hat, eat burritos and drink at an open bar. MOP speaks the truth!
BONUS SHIT.
A 2003 one hit wonder, but what a hit. BONECRUSER's NEVA SCARED. Amazing video, amazing song. Bonecrusher was my favorite character on the Def Jam Fight For New York video game.
Now go out and start a fight with bitch that don't deserve the chain he wearin.
