I just can't get enough of party rap/hip-house/electro-rap/hipster-rap. In a way I feel bad that kids on the come up won't have the hard as fuck shit I listened to growing up but you know it's probably a good thing. All hip-hop and hardcore did was make me a little knucklehead. OK I have a bunch of different things. Another Hip-House video and maybe the most recognizable song from that era and scene. ROB BASE and DJ EZ ROCK - IT TAKES TWO. After that I've got rocafella one hit wonders YOUNG GUNZ with the song CANT STOP WONT STOP. rocafella was clearly seeing the demise of street hip hop and was already going for some "get over shit". I would say one of the catchiest singles of the decade. Lastly we have French rappers SO FRESH SQUAD with the greatly titled song SO FRESH HISTORY X. They are in a way more street and more pop than traditional mainstream French rap that has always been pretty much conscious. They are in the TTC sphere of influence and I think they will make it really big.

buddy, what scares you?
Youth Anthems ACTIVATE.
K, one of the main things I hate is the folklorisation of non anglophone cultures. Like if your from Botswana the only shit that western people will even think of checking out is their traditional music heavily anchored into the past. It just commercializes their ethno-cultural history and doesn't really push youngins to see their native tongue as being something vital that can thrive in a globalized world. I think the main goal of art is to go forward. We never hear of non anglo artists doing modern music in their own tongue. It's very rare for one to bust through and the french and spanish have been pretty much the only other languages to ever even register blips on the anglo-western music radar. Anyways. TEKI LATEX is quickly becoming one of the best french rappers lyrically and he has always been on the forefront of shit in terms of beats. Today we have a video with him and Swedish rapper ALEXIS WEAK. This might be the first time I have heard a Swede speak his language in a song. I give you a really well done swedish/french electro-ish rap video.

Next up is a generic lo-fi indie party punk band MIKA MIKO. They are pretty much all-girl so I'm liking it. Gotta support females playing instruments! The video is also pretty cool. I also want to add that pitchfork tv's new streaming video tech suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

hot girls everywhere
I want to spark off this post by saying I don't think the girl from transformers is hot. Sure she's "hot" and I would totally slobber over her magazine spreads if I was 9 years old but fuck it. She reaches a point of magazine hotness that makes her completely unattractive to me. Her so called good looks put her in a zone where she becomes as abstract as algebra or astro-physics. I also think it's a crime that bumblebee doesn't talk.
K, video time. Got some good stuff for you today. Since we're already talking about girls let's look at a video g-paul sent me last night. Relatively new French electro band called MAKE THE GIRLS DANCE and their song is called BABY BABY BABY. I'm pretty sure they had big baby campbell in mind when they wrote up those lyrics. The song is aight and there's some pg-13 nudity up in the video which is always a must.
Next up is a new group MAJOR LAZER! If you haven't heard it yet it's king DIPLO and Switch. Their whole deal is that they are bringing a real Jamaican vibe to modern dance music. The DIPLO/SANTOGOLD mixtape might be my most listened to release of 2008. Diplo was clearly going nuts with the reggae. I think Major Lazer is an extension of this. I also have to hype this shit cause I won a free Major Lazer tshirt of the Mad Decent blog and I am wearing that shit as we speak. Oh yeah, the video is particularly amazing towards the end. This will warm the heart of anybody who remembers action figure commercials. So I give you the Jamaican super-hero MAJOR LAZER (feat mr. lexx and santigold) and the song HOLD THE LINE. Must click of the day.
Last up is an old school joint that I discovered by accident. Pure 80's babe KIM WILDE. I knew of her song Kids in America in high school cause shitty Canadian band Len covered it for a movie. Ironically that song was huge in the UK but didn't really make noise in America. Her bigger single was YOU KEEP ME HANGIN' ON. I "discovered" this track because I downloaded like 500 80's pop songs for an ipod battle. My ipod is filled with a lot shit now but this song came on once on shuffle and blew my mind. The single version is short but the version I have on my ipod is like 7 minutes and is a truly epic 80s single. Anyways this video is equally amazing as an 80s pop touchstone. I fucking love yung Linda Hamilton like girls and I can't wait for huge hair to come back in style mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

We could have worked things out
My Jerry Only costume at Halloween was sweet. Still got some trickle down Halloween material to cover. Notably a special Halloween song by BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN called A NIGHT WITH THE JERSEY DEVIL. Not his best but dude that song title is so badass. The video is also pretty boss.
Next up we have BLOC PARTY. I really like this band but I find they got blown up by the press and now they are totally getting torn down by the same media that made them so huge so fast. Some parisian bloggers ambushed the group and forced them into doing an acoustic version of MODERN LOVE in an alley. It's pretty special.

Judd Apatow made this song overplayed but he also created Freaks and Geeks which I have been obsessed with recently.

yo today is my birthday. I'm not even going to post videos I'm going to post straight songs off of youtube. I'm going against my own rules cause its my god damned birthday. Ok ok ok I gotta go to a house party real quick but I just got put on to a brand fuckin new video that made want to post bad. I'm going over to Kappanther's pad to ball out and get juiced for real. Step into liquid kate bosworth/Duke Kahanamoku style. Mad liquid. Mash it up style. This is me trying to advance slang technology like only eazy iain knows how. Trying to bust a nut and make buck is today's theme. Huslting international.
So we're going to start with an easy intro into the world of Grime (England's modification of Hip Hop). DIZZEE RASCAL, fairly big you might know him. Math + English was a good album if not more americanized (the song feat UGK reps hard). This is a pure story telling song which really takes you to the staircases of London's estates. The video has a real cool concept. The song is SIRENS.
BUT that's not what I'm hyping right now. Grime's kinda been quiet. KANO's coming out with a new album at the end of September and if this song is any indication it's going to be mads Haïti (means good/nuts.). The song is called HUSTLER and the video is a MUST WATCH for any The Wire fan. It's got that real Barksdale high rise feel kinda like young stringer bell who still wants to kill slick talking hoppers. FUCK ITS GOOD. Grime's back.
Now I talked sorta bad bout BOOBA who I call the French fitty. Listening to this song I gotta say his flow has something to it. He's way more aggro than fitty. The Warriors influence on the video. Dig GARDE LA PÊCHE. (translates to a combo of chill/shut the fuck up).
BONUS.
MANU MILITARI a Montréal white rapper who is maybe the best from a lyrical stand point. N.2 MTL conventional rapper. If you don't speak french you might not like the song as much because it is really lyric driven. The song is about bombing shit aka grafitti. It's real fuckin good, there's the shake of a spray can in the beat! L'EMPREINTE is the song.

It's not the way I choose to live
No theme. My dad called me a jack daniels of all trades yesterday. I think that was the nicest thing anybody has ever said to me. SPEAKING OF NICE THINGS. My intifada ibroheem Paul G said some real nice things about me on his wicked blog, many thanks!
Ok so I keep hearing about this Brooklyn place. All that Williamsburgh shit, the new L.E.S. whatever whatever. From all the stuff I read about it I just imagine it as being like vancouver's east hastings but with deathly skinny hipsters instead of deathly skinny heroin users. I talk a big game but if ever the opportunity arose I would move there in a second. My bags wouldn't even be unpacked and I would start talking about it like if I had been born there, pure douchestyle. Ok, we have another cell phone commercial song (the source of cocain funds for all indie bands) YEA YEAH by hipster brooklynites MATT AND KIM. They are coming to Ottawa soon and I will be there pretending to not like them, haha.
Next up we have a real played out song PRO NAILS by KID SISTER but she doesn't have any more recent videos so I gotta give you this. Anyways, I missed her when she came to Ottawa which bummed me out bad. I just watched an interview with her and I really think that we could be best of friends/soul mates. Again I say this in the creepiest and most fanboyish way possible. She's was/possibly still is dating DJ A-TRAK who is french canadian. I might have a chance! Her second album was supposed to be called COCO BEWARE (wow!) but now is apparently being called DREAM DATE (meh). I wish I had a machine to make beats.
Now I'm gonna hit you with an old school joint. TOUS LES GARÇONS ET LES FILLES BY FRANÇOISE HARDY. I've posted about her before. I talk about hotness a lot but I truly think Françoise Hardy is the most beautiful woman ever. This song is from 1962. She was 18 when this song came out and she wrote almost everything she sang (including this song). The video is really cool and has that French New Wave feel to it. If you are going to watch only one video today do yourself a favor and don't be bitch, just click it.

I thought about doing an all GORILLA BISCUITS post but they really have bad classic footage on youtube which is a total bummer. Once for an acting class at university we had to like answer these questions about ourselves. One question was what music resembles you the most. Some assholes said shit like Mozart or "I don't know" when it got to me I was like "yo, the Gorilla Biscuits discography." They are funny yet serious, laid back yet tough and awesome yet fucking awesome. Stagediving at their show was a moment I will remember for the rest of my life. DEGREDATION is the song and racism is fuckin wrong! (two versions!)

To a new paradise
Man late edition. I got my haircut tonight my mullet is gone as well as 5 pounds of hair. This evening I go all franco on your asses. Common theme is Montréal but with one clip from Marseilles because they could not be ignored.
Number one. Today's weather was pure will smith summertime. A rarity in Ottawa this so called summer. So I wanted to throw you a summer jam from the 514-450. Granted it came out in May 2007 but the video is just TOO good. Hell even rival blogger Perez Hilton featured them which is pretty cool (no homo). OMNIKROM TROP BANANE. Listen carefully and you will hear a Mr Freeze reference, the ultimate summer snack.
Number two. Another electro rap/ synth pop song from MTL. NUMÉRO # the song is called HIT POP (maybe what electro rap should be called?). The singer is from France but the DJ is from Montréal. They operate in Québec. Pretty rad song so even if it didn't have a video I put it on.
Number three. We get into Mount REAL shit, REAL CITY WHAT. Into french rap proper, none of this electro shit. My favorite francophone rapper of all time SANS PRESSION. He's my second favorite rapper after Biggie. That's saying a lot coming from a head like me. Sans Pression rhymes like a lot of kids at my school spoke. It's a dialect that many francos couldn't understand. He always had a huge place in our cd players. Anyways the song is NUMÉRO 1. The video features pro mma fighters and boxers from Québec. The best "Canadian" fighters are french. GSP came out to this song in his last title defense. Also French rappers in Canada sell more records than English-Canadian rappers (sorry kardinal). Which proves my theory I developed in Toronto, WE AIN'T WHITE, WE FRENCH. He also shout outs the Democratic Republic of Congo in this song... Heavy.
Man I can't even call this bonus cause it's so good. These guys are the ones that exploded French rap. Chuck D told me France was the second country of hip hop. Mc Solaar was the originator but IAM took it to the next level. A big time crew from Marseilles, a tough as nails city where they speak with a messed up accent. These guys came out with a song that featured WU TANG. It made kids "go shit, Wu Tang is rapping alongside french dudes." It really validated the language for me. Anyways this was a really long time ago and French rap is huge now. This guy Booba is ultra popular, he's a parisian 50 cent. K-maro is like a Lebanese usher. It got REAL commercial (the electro shit is a breath of fresh air yet it's also poked at in this song). IAM came out recently with a song called COUPE LE CAKE. The video is hilarious and they really don't take themselves seriously but they are telling these kids "we gave this to you, we gave you a piece of the cake. Remember that we were wolves and you are being kitty cats and it's time that you make an effort for the younger generations." Wow I spoke too much, you HAVE to watch this video!

you won't have to ask if i still care
It's time for some NEW MUSIC (sort of)! Since we are chained to the video format really new stuff is hard to come by. A lot of my posts are about older stuff so I decided to get hip to what young hepcats are jiving and bepopping to at the local jazz clubs and army legion. So we will be featuring videos that came out since at least June.
Ok first up is a group I recently got wise to, the MYSTERY JETS, from London. Their second album 21 came out in march but the most recent single (which I am really liking) HALF IN LOVE WITH ELIZABETH came out yesterday. The song is about dude seeing another girl on the side but they found a way to make the video pretty funny. Cool new band with a cool video means you get BIG BABIED.
Next up is one of my favorite new bands that I really tried to hate. That's how cool I am. I am on that next level hatred shit. VAMPIRE WEEKEND. They are so borderline whiteboy-worldbeat-ripoff-douchebags it's not funny. But it's like they barely stay inbounds of my love. Anyways they have been making a lot of noise and are music journalist darlings that will probably be SEVERELY backlashed on their second album (see teenage fanclub post). Anyways they are really catchy and easy to listen to (oh crap I made a reference to easy listening, kill me if I start listening to magic 100). The song is OXFORD COMMA, the single came out in May but the video premiered in late June. The vid seems to be influenced by the WES ANDERSON directed Mastercard commercial. It's a really beautiful video.
Next up is ESTELLE's most recent video. Apparently her album differs from the wicked first single American Boy feat Kanye. The video came out on the 18th. I post it because a small town welsh girl Duffy and the fat English girl Adele are getting a lot of love for their soul revival shit and Estelle called them out on appropriating her culture. Now being a white boy who constantly appropriates black culture I feel that if you're gonna do that you have to step the fuck up because you are gonna get much deserved scrutiny. Cuizinier is GOOD, Paul Wall is GOOD whereas Adele and Duffy are getting pushed like hell and Estelle is getting buried. Estelle is way better than those two. The track is called PRETTY PLEASE feat CEE-LO. Bow down to a soul singer that's greater than you.

Final video of the day is a bit older (came out in may) it is called STRESS by French house band JUSTICE. It got banned by a lot of stations but in my opinion it's the VIDEO OF THE YEAR. It is the least dancy song on their great album Cross and the video goes in complete opposition of their previous squeaky clean efforts. It's inspired by the great French film La Haine. A MUST WATCH VIDEO.

I love hip hop in most of it's forms. And I do like "conscious hip hop" the whole children of KRS ONE type of thing. HOWEVER, the genre always makes the claim that it is the only "real hip hop"and everything else is fake unless you've got a guy in an Adidas tracksuit breaking while an Asian is painting graffiti. They are like a god damned religion. Well let me tell you something, hip hop was not started by whiteboys and rich blacks with the goal of educating others about shit. It was started at parties based out of dance music (disco). Hip hop is not just about becoming conscious it's also there to make you unconscious by way of partying. AH HA! you're thinking i'm gonna do a post about beach cruisers and 2 live crew, hell no. This post is about subgenres of hiphop/dance music that have emerged around the world. It's time to get your passport of awesomeness stamped were going for a ride!
Starting our trip is diplo discovered BONDE DO ROLE the coolest Brazilians this side of Renzo Gracie. Bonde Do Role have been popular amongst hipster circles for awhile now and have recently lost their lead singer (m.c.?) Marina (the girl) apparently they have replaced her by a girl who got part of her vag removed to win an mtv brasil contest... That kind of describes their overall feel. Technically the genre is called Funk Crarioca (meaning funk from Rio) but outside of Brazil it is known as Baile Funk. Baile apparently means prom. So it's all about partying. Generally simple beats with a lot of samples with sung/shouted lyrics. Bonde Do Role being my only live Baile Funk experience and I gotta they say that it's pretty mental. The song is OFFICE BOY because I like the video the most that being said you should all download/buy their album WITH LASERS.
Moving from Portuguese to Spanish we are going to explore the world of Reggaeton. Another misleading name. Where Baile Funk doesn't sound like Funk Reggaeton doesn't really sound like reggae. This type of music started by afro-panamanians translating their favorite reggae hit. It's modern form though comes from the "Dem Bow" beat which was popularized by dancehall reggae artist Shabba Ranks. It's a beat that goes sorta goes like "boom-ch-boom-chick". This beat is like on every single Reggaeton song and it's the main thing that differentiates it from hispaniphone hiphop. Most of the genre's artists come from Puerto Rico (where american hip hop had an earlier influence.). You probably heard of the featured artist DADDY YANKEE who really broke reggaeton into mainstream music. The song is called GANGSTA ZONE chosen due to it's toughness. It also features Snoop.
Finally we have an as of yet unnamed genre. Electro hip-hop, synthpop etc. I call it electro hip-hop. It's biggest point of origin would be in France and has spread in the francophone world. Montréal now spawning the more artists. Essentially hip-hop on dance influenced or sometimes straight electro dance beats. The lyrics also are devoid of any politics or tough guy stuff. It's generally about clothing and fucking. Needless to say I eat this shit up. It is NOT to be confused with traditional French hip hop which has existed for a long time. France is the second country to have adopted hip hop and the sound is very very east coast. TTC is the biggest group out of this new genre and the group I will feature. TTC is not the toronto transit commission, it stands for Teki Latex, Tido Berman and Cuizinier, the three MCs of the group. Yelle also falls into this genre although a bit less hip-hop. The video I chose is TRAVAILLER. Spankrock (who have worked with Cuizinier) are similar but to my knowledge have evolved independently of the French influence. Enjoy this sweet video.

People in France have been criticizing that TTC are becoming too pop I don't really have a problem though. Apparently their next album is going back to the roots. This video is really beautiful, get psyched.
