This Sunday I saw NOTORIOUS with my homegirl Margaux. If you have followed the blog a bit you know I am huuuuuuuuge biggie fan. The first rapper I got into as a youngin (grade 6) he had accessible singles that appealed to me as a child but it was also his image that gave me a lot of confidence as an overweight kid. I know it sounds cheesy but he inspired me to have pride in the way I look and not take shit from nobody. As I grew older I started to get more into hip hop and started to analyze the lyrics as well as notice that newer hip hop while good could not hold a candle to the perfection that was biggie. As an ultra fan I gotta say that I was really happy with the movie. Jamal "Gravy" Woolard nails the role and it almost made me feel like he was alive again which was pretty cool. He should drop rapping and try to act for a living I think (although he will probably get type casted pretty bad). The music blasted through the theatre surround sound was great and I was lip syncing the lyrics the whole time. One thing that bummed me out though was this it was a true story and that he had to die again which reminds me a lot of reading history books about New France. No matter how many times you experience the story the ending is always the same, we lose. Not gonna lie, I had tears in my eyes at least twice. One scene between Big and his mom talking on the phone from jail and the funeral procession. He died at age 24. Such a young age to die but at the same time it made me think what the fuck have I accomplished in my life? If a guy with all the chips stacked against him since birth can follow his dreams it would be a crime for a relatively well off kid like myself to not at least try. Hopefully in 2010 I will be in another country trying to give it a real go. Check the movie out.

First off we have Shabazz the Disciple with Crime Saga. An original member of Sunz of Man and probably my favorite Wu-Tang affiliated artist. This little jammy was originally released as a single in '95 and was later featured on his debut full length The Book of Shabazz in 2003. This album is one of the darkest, grimiest, rawest, realest hip hop albums ever released. Fuck you if you disagree.



Up next is Neglect with Good for Nothing. The most depressed band NYHC has ever produced. They did the damn thing from '91 to '95. This video was shot in Germany. Real as fuck. Check it.



Last but not least I need to give a shout out to SMACK DVD. The realest hip hop DVD in the game. This is one of my favorite videos they've featured. It's also Big Baby Campbell's current jammy. Look Nigga You Food by Stack Bundles. SQUAAAAAAAAAAD UP!

Feel like phoning this one in here. Last night I had to decide on the improv team the U of O is sending to the national tournament. I felt like crap cutting friends of mine, the real world sucks. So to cheer myself up i've got maybe the best video of all time to give to you.

The Alchemist feat. SNOOP DOOG, JADAKISS and PUSHA T - LOSE YOUR LIFE. This is the coolest video ever. I think the things I love the most after my mother would be Halloween and gangsta rap. This video combines both into something completely and utterly perfect. A MUST WATCH VIDEO.




Next up is a weird band from Manchester. WE HAVE BAND the song is called OH. I think its just weird and pretentious enough for it to fall into the shit I like pile. That and they don't even have an EP which is cool. I like artists who make it hard for their fans to have access to their art.

Lately I have been listening to a lot of THE PIXIES so I'm gonna send you some of that goodness with the song DEBASER. One of my favorite songs of all time. That being said I think I might have posted this already... if I did that's good, double debaser.

If you haven't clicked on yesterdays bonus song you should, still on repeat. It's a beautiful life. Man last night post improv bar was so-so. I was kind of bummed on my solitary walk home. Moral of the story is you can never be depressed while riding a BMX. Seriously though, I need a slumpbuster. But before I bust my slump I have clean my room. The other day my moms woke me up and was amazed by the mess. She is a nurse that worked in AIDS care for years. She sometimes had to go with the social worker to patients' houses. A lot of them being heroin addicts. She goes "iain your room looks like a god damned shooting alley" I laugh it off and with a real concerned look in her eye she goes "no I'm serious, I've seen them before and this is exactly what it looks like". So yeah, I'm pretty sure I have to clean it up there. No theme.


Up first is T.I.'s first big single RUBBERBAND MAN off 2003's Trap Muzik. One of my favorite songs from that time period. Can't go wrong with lines like "wild as the taliban". That taliban sure is wild and I'm sure they appreciate the shout out. Osama I see you, capo status, you already know what it is.



Revisitin THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN. Last night as I was bummingly walking back home after escorting a real mean girl back to her university residence (HAHA) this song came up on shuffle and made more depressed/happy. I love these guys and I love this song. I hate people trying to copy them though. Trying to copy the greats just makes you look like an idiot. Check out Joseph Smith when he made up Mormonism. Come on bro you ain't jesus or mohammed.



And we're going to wrap this up with the DROPKICK MURPHYS one of my top 5 bands ever. I seriously don't care what peole think about that. I know a lot of dumbasses like them moreso now that they haven't gotten really big. Fuck it, they make great and original music. This song is THE WARRIOR'S CODE about the great boxer Micky Ward. A guy who has lost a lot but is probably the most gutsy and courageous fighter ever. His trilogy of fights with Arturo Gatti is legendary. Their first fight gives me goosebumps every time I watch it. This song is a real depression buster for me. ENJOY.

I was once called a modern day James Joyce not because I was good at writing but because I was a drunken asshole. So I'm going to hit you with the folk song that inspired the book Finnegans Wake. When I die I want a funeral in my house (or in a bar) with tons of booze and my corpse well exposed. My late grannie tried to keep my seanair(grandfather in scots gaelic) in her house but the stupid municipal council wouldn't let her. Jeeze I loved my grandparents. I would just sit down and listen to them telling me stories for hours. A lot of them had to do with whisky. It's in my blood, I have to drink. The song has a really good intro, hook it up. every morning when I wake up

One of my heroes plays on my dad's soccer team (which is almost entirely comprised of Scottish immigrants). The man is in his mid 60's and is still a very good soccer player. He's also a union man who swears like you could not believe. His secret to this health is that he drinks (at least) one pint of beer a day, takes one good shit a day and only eats one meal a day(!). Today I have started this diet. I'm gonna try to do the one big meal a day thing, snacks are for the weak. The theme today is pretty damn somber and I think I am bummed out just by thinking about. The best artists to have been murdered...

If you know me as a human being you KNOW who I am going to start with on this post. I have posted about this man before and I will most definitely post about him again. Christopher Wallace a.k.a. THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. . This guy is one of my favorite artists. Bar none the greatest rapper to have ever lived. I saw a tshirt on the internet that said "If Biggie were still alive most rappers would be working at McDonalds" this is true. Every rapper on TV today owes him everything. Many people think of Tupac as a "deeper" artist. I would disagree as Biggie was heavily introspective. He has a song about suicide which is a HEAVILY taboo and stigmatized topic amongst the african-american community. The song today is PARTY AND BULLSHIT which at first glance seems to be simply about partying but he really takes us into that whole high school house party world. Painting a picture of the epic events of adolescence. His posthumous album was already called Life After Death before he was murdered by drive-by shooting in Los Angeles 15 days before it was released. His murder remains unsolved to this day.

A band I got into towards the end of my high school was THE GITS. A Seatle punk/grunge band that was active from 1986 to 1993. When you listen to them its truly Mia Zapata's voice that reaches out and gets you. She was apparently a huge influence on Bikini Kill/Le Tigre's Kathleen Hannah. She sings about hopelessness and alcohol. Their music really strikes a chord with me. Mia Zapata was brutally raped and murdered in 1993. Her murder was finally solved due to new developments in DNA analysis. I know I joke around a lot but it makes me really angry that a woman still can't feel safe walking home at night. The song is called SEAWEED and if ever you have the time you should check the lyrics as they are really beautiful.

Everybody has favorite genres of music but I'll be damned if you can't appreciate a true ARTIST. A person who's talent seems to be infinite. One of these artists is MARVIN GAYE. He was the most popular artist on Motown during the 60's and he went against the grain big time in refusing the song writing formula at Motown at the time. He made the creative process a collaboration between songwriter, producer and artist. In high school my friend Sam's grand father gave him his car once he was too old to drive. It was a huge Oldsmobile. Sam installed a thumping sound system in that thing. Marvin was a staple in the cd player. Marvin Gaye was tragically shot dead by his own father. You can't write stuff that sad. The song is SEXUAL HEALING.

The final person is probably the most culturally important. JOHN LENNON. I haven't ever really been big into The Beatles. I think this is because everybody loves them and I never liked to be on the winning team. Lennon though has the same birthday as me (9th of October) which always got me interested in him thinking we had some ridiculous connection. Having recently read an interview with him I think he quit The Beatles for the same reason young Iain never wanted to like them, not wanting to be in the majority. The song is WORKING CLASS HERO. I think it's easily my favorite of his. Green Day should have never touched it. Lennon was sadly shot in the back 4 times in New York City.

WU TANG DA MYSTERY OF CHESSBOXING. My favorite wu group song. This is what it's all about. the odb meth ghost stretch is nuts. Jacques Cousteau can't get this low.

Now I think I finally understand

My recent posts have been so feminine I have actually started menstruating. Not only have I spent 25$ on coffee crisp chocolate bars I have bloodied a perfectly good pair of business casual khakis. The doctor told me the only cure for pussyness is to man the fuck up, BLOG STYLE. So this is it I'm tooling up and ready to make the name Youth Anthems ring out in the Baltimore high rise projects. Our theme today is punch you in the motherfucking face hip hop from the late 90's and early 2000s. 3 of the 4 songs on today's post were featured on my championship run at the local Ottawa Ipod Battle. Shout out to Team Intifada DJs.


Let's start with the SUPERTHUG by NOREAGA. Came out in 1998 but I really got into it in 1999/2000 aka grade 10. An early track to be produced by The Neptunes. Back then I had no idea who The Neptunes were but I really loved all their singles without knowing the common thread of chad and pharrelian production. I used to listen to this on my DIAMOND RIO aka the first mp3 player ever released. It had like 25 megabytes of room and ate batteries like the Japanese eat hot dogs at Coney Island. The chorus of just yelling what is pure genius.



Another 1998 song is RUFF RYDERS ANTHEM by DMX. This was a song that I would watch muchmusic/musiqueplus every waking second just for a chance to hear it. It's dark and hell is hot was my favorite album in grade 9. My friends and I bootlegged copies in my highschool with photocopied covers printed on blue paper. Shit was my intro to crime. DMX might sort of suck these days but I can't see how you can't like this song. That whole album was soooo good at the time. My 13-14 year old brain could not imagine music getting any better than this. Which is pretty hilarious in retrospect. You about to get earl simmoned.

Now for this last song I want you to stop reading if you are pregnant, suffering from heart problems or if you're a bitch. This is some LIVE shit. Probably the best "punch you in the face" song in the history of hip hop. Especially the version with the Funkmaster Flex intro. M.O.P.'s ANTE UP. The be all end all of getting riled the fuck up. I remember reading a rolling stone review of the song and they said it "wasn't scary like a fight it was scary like war." the year 2000 version of Iain was like "whoa, rolling stone just read my mind". M.O.P. stands for MASH OUT POSSE which was the same name of the gang that Lil Fame and Bill Danze were part of. They are from Brownsville, Brooklyn which is where John Gotti was a streetgang member as a teenager. Nothing gets more real than this. Also there's a line in the song that goes "hats, food, booze, essentials, credentials" Shout out to Dan Hooligan who I went to visit in T.O. to buy a hat, eat burritos and drink at an open bar. MOP speaks the truth!

A 2003 one hit wonder, but what a hit. BONECRUSER's NEVA SCARED. Amazing video, amazing song. Bonecrusher was my favorite character on the Def Jam Fight For New York video game.

I went to a good house party last night. You know I'm not gonna lie I started drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon just to look cool but god damn does it go down easy. It's like drinking spring water that gets you nice and toasty. Granpa likes his juice. You know I'm like a scrap booking maniac but instead of scrap booking I love drinking. Ooh la la. Today being the lord's day I wanted to take it easy and not think of a theme. As I got into grabbing songs I got sucked into theme-ery. Today we look at the video work of legendary director SPIKE JONEZ. I'd love to have his job, too bad the video medium is dying. No more videos on MTV, MusiquePlus or Much just reality tv shows about hulk hogan's son fucking up kids with his car.

Alright, let's attack this in chronological order. 1992, Spike's 2nd major video. 100% by SONIC YOUTH. To me, this video more resembles his film work than the rest of his music video oeuvre. This is Sonic Youth at the beginning of their major label career at the time they were getting Nirvana some attention as well Spike Jones himself. This wave is a bit more accessible than their older stuff. The song is supposedly about the murder of Joe Cole who was Henry Rollins' BFF. Current big time actor Jason Lee is in the video as well as Kim Gordon's bass was borrowed from Keanu Reeves! there's some trivia for you.



1993, Scottish band TEENAGE FANCLUB. The video is probably one of Spike's least cool. No weird concept or nothing. The band is pretty sweet but the album this song is off of got destroyed by critics. This was probably due to the fact that they got way too much critical love earlier in their career. Like bukake levels of critical jizzing. Their previous album "bandwagonesque" beat out Nirvana's Nevermind in Spin's year end record of the year poll. Whatever, this song (HANG ON) is good. I also gotta rep my Glasgow set.

1995, now we move into the big budget shit. Sweet french house groupe DAFT PUNK. DA FUNK is the song. And the video is a fucking MAN DOG chilling in NYC. Nuff fuckin said.



1997. Another NOTORIOUS B.I.G. song, SKY'S THE LIMIT. Probably one of the best video's ever. A posthumous Biggie track. Little kids fill in for lil cease and co. Just seeing children having fun in the hip hop high life kinda evokes the childhood dreams a young Christopher Wallace had of leaving his world of squalor. This shit is inspirational, get inspired.

Spike Jonze = best video director of all time.

He drinks a lager drink

Grade 6 official transition between sweatpants and jeans. Grade 7 burgeoning teenager. This is a tale of the year 1997. I was in a new school due to rezoning. The student Machiavellian politics were thrown into chaos. Lost, I started to really get into music as well as having my first real introduction to hip hop due to being in a class with a bunch of Haitians who knew what was up. It was a new world for my earz. My music was still limited to what radio and television showed me but looking back on my tastes I think you can see the seeds of coolness.

Grade 7-8 Iain still had a weird feeling of loyalty to guitar driven music. One song that I shat my pants for in 97 was BLINK 182's DAMMIT. It was also the anthem at Camp Air-Eau-Bois during the summer of 98. But it was pop punk which led me to punk to hardcore and back to pop punk. That's why I say for 100 fucking dumbasses that like my chemical romance there will be 1 really cool guy who will become a music nerd and 1 ugly duckling girl that will blossom into a hot scene chick. Be nice to uggos cause they can get right over the summer! First day of school jaw drops ftw. I still really love this song. Straight pleasure with no guilt.



Staying inside punk shit I discovered PENNYWISE off a shitty compilation album, think big shiny tunes). These comps is was what kids did pre-mp3s to get the one off songs they wanted cause you didn't want to risk spending 15 bucks on a full album that had one song you liked and a bunch that sucked. (ie: i mother earth). The song was SOCIETY. I never saw the video on tv because it was banned. Later on in high school I felt bad for so call "punk kids" who told me Pennywise was the "real shit" when I was trying to tell them about local hardcore shows. This song did a lot to get me interested in politics though. I just found out this year that they were a legit HC act in Cali during the 80's. Kinda ironic.



The next song changed my life the most. HYPNOTIZE by THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. who to this day still is one of my absolute favorite artists. Hypnotize even more so than Wu Tang made me see why Hip Hop was superior to the top 40 rock I was digging at the time. I had to give it up. Biggie was also obese like my obese childhood self. Kind of dorky to say that he gave me confidence in being cool and a fatass, he helped me have swagger. Shit my school picture that year my lips looked really big and I wasn't smiling and said Haitians started calling me white biggie or biggie blanc. I had zero problem with being called that. Today I am much less fat but I still dig the big. As time went on I went beyond liking the pop aspects of biggies career and got into the pristine beautifully constructed coke raps that are very introspective. I give you the video that made hip hop THE mainstream music.




Bonus:

For English class that year we had to make a commercial for something. We did ours for Adidas basketball sneakers. I was a fat Russian exchange student who sucked at basketball. I strap on the sneaks and BLOCK ROCKIN BEATS by THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS comes on in the backround and I dunk on a bunch of kids. We had pretty nifty special effect tricks to make it look like I was for real dunkin and got a dude's dad to layer the music on top of the images. I wish I had that tape.



97 was a great year.

A dreaded sunny day

No theme today. That's fine though cause there's always the overlying theme of awesomeness that is omnipresent.

First up at bat is one of my favorite hardcore bands of all time, YOUTH OF TODAY. I've been hearing a lot of music snobs hate on either : hardcore in general or specifically anything that isn't part of the first wave of hardcore or the almost unlistenable screamo-ish subgenres (note that I said almost because I listen to some of that as well). These kids used to listen to this but now listen to garage rock influenced punk and drink way too much. I also drink way too much but I don't forget my ROOTS. Ok, so this song is called NO MORE off We're Not in This Alone which came out in the super important hardcore year of 1988. I picked this song because it has a music video for it and that is really rare for HC bands of that era. The song did a lot to get vegan/vegetarian ideals inside of hardcore which is pretty cool. Now mind you, the video is hilariously low budget but the parts with Ray Cappo in the varsity jacket are pretty cool. You can feel the youthful energy and honesty which is rare in a lot of bands we like. Also, HC pioneering fashion styles once again. There are designer varsity jackets that go for ridiculous cash these days when HC bands have been making their own for years. Too much talk not enough rock. do it.



Deuxièmement is MALAJUBE. A Québécois indie group with French lyrics that has actually gotten attention in the English Canadian (and American) media which is very rare. They have also said they won't ever sing in English. Not enough French kids get this. Like in punk or indie the chances of making millions is pretty rare so why bend over backwards to sing in English when doing it French will give you cool kind of niche appeal to the losers over at pitchfork. (ironically coming from a French guy writing his obscure blog in English!) You might recognize this song as it was featured on a rogers wireless commercial... Whatever I'm not going to hate on a brother stacking his paper high. The video is beautifully animated as well. Anyways I love this band and you should to.



In conclusion we have the best rappers alive THE CLIPSE. Every single music critic in the world has the veiniest of bones for these guys and with good reason. These guys are the living incarnation of The Notorious B.I.G. in terms of never ever dropping a line, toughness and pure style. The song I chose is off the upcoming Re-Up Gang album (their larger group featuring Sandman and Ab-liva). Now what's interesting about this song is that it is on a Scott Storch beat as opposed to the constant collaboration with The Neptunes. In their past mixtape there's been a feeling of friction between the longtime buddies. Having a non Neptune beat makes me feel like they might have a broader Top 40 appeal. I say this because they always got the best and therefore weirdest Neptune beats. So I give you the low budget video (by rap standards) for the song FAST LIFE. Take some time to listen to these great lyrics.
