sometimes i don't know

Today is such a beautiful day. I have an upload post ready but I will publish it on a later date. Today I return to the traditional format of the video first policy we hold here at Youth Anthems. I also need to update the look of the blog I think. I'm thinking going from "kinda shity looking" to "sort of less shitty looking".

Today's theme is OLD SCHOOL FEMALE FRONTED 90's ROCK. We are going to have 1 shitty yet nostalgically hilarious band, 1 actually amazing band and 1 nostalgic guilty pleasure that I should consider shitty. But before we go into the theme I think I should let you know about a new artist.

SPEECH DEBELLE is a female rapper from England and I gotta say I enjoy the way she's using the form that is hip hop. She maintains a youthful honesty all while keeping her dignity as a woman which is sometimes sadly (and not so sadly) thrown out the window with female MCs. The song is called GO THEN BYE. Might be a bit safe but I really like it.

WOMAN FRONTED 90'S ROCK/GRUNGE/ALTERNATIVE MAINSTREAM CRAP THEME

N.1 is possibly one of the bands I suffered through the most through MuchMusic and MusiquePlus... VERUCA SALT. I thought they were Canadian they had so much airtime but no they were from Chicago and just caught on the whole grunge shit. The girls were also considered to be hot for the particular scene they were trying to evoke. Their first single isn't too bad if you're looking at it from a nostalgia point of view. It's called SEETHER. Videos from this era all had fish eye lenses and fucking cats in them (as well as skateboarding sometimes). If I were to do a video for a local band I would just copy the shit of this type video.

Now we go with a video that came out during the same period (1993-1994) called SAINTS by THE BREEDERS. Aka Kim Deal's "other" band. Great shit, great 90s video feels way more authentic than the previous video. All around great vibe from the 90s alterna-grunge wave that hit the mainstream.

Now we have the final phase of this female alterna-grunge wave with English group REPUBLICA. Jesus I really liked their singles and videos in grade 6-7-8. They added in electronic elements that foreshadowed the coming breakout popularity of electronic music culture. You might recognize the catchy song READY TO GO. Not a lot of artistic merit but it reminds me a lot of days spent glued to the god damn music video channel.

Tina's doing her dance, Jon's looking for romance

I think I might start posting as another one of my alter egos. "L'enfant terrible", not as catchy as B.B.C. but I don't know I'm just feeling that these days. Today we have a REALLY random grab bag of videos for you to enjoy. I can't believe how cold it is right now. I'm dreaming of white xmas is stupid.

Let's start his party up with some good old gospel music. JOHNNY CASH, ROY ORBISON and 2 other guys. Xmas tribute to Elvis. The song is called THIS TRAIN IS BOUND FOR GLORY. They have to whole special up at pitchfork.tv pretty intense stuff.

Next up is LADY SOVEREIGN! Video for her new song I GOT YOU DANCING. The video is pretty cool (references to clockwork orange AND the warriors). I also never realized that she had a real pretty face. A female friend of mine hung out with her in her tour bus in MTL and apparently she's super nice too. I think she would make a legit GF.

Lady Sovereign - I Got You Dancing

And finally we have a really a shitty group LEN. Now I have an explanation for this. This past month I have been OBSESSED with 1990's teen movies. I have watched Kids, Hackers, Idle Hands, American Pie and the Katie Holmes epic GO (which I watched last night). Anyways these movies make me all warm and fuzzy inside (well maybe not kids). On the GO soundtrack there was IF YOU STEAL MY SUNSHINE by Len. I know it sucks (I hated it back then to) but it just reminds me of being a 13 year old kid and I like that. Also for people who have been wondering what my blog post titles are they are lyrics from shitty one hit wonder style songs like this one, I am starting to run out though.

Finally what are other 90's teen movies I should watch? ( They can be comedies, dramas, horror whatever). I think I'm gonna do a Scream/I Know What You Did Last Summer double feature soon.

give me something to break

Saturdays are funtimes. Deal with songs that were major funtimes for me as a chubby kid in my friend's garage.

if you listen real closely you can hear a bit of nirvana in this song. FOO FIGHTERS, BIG ME.

my friend charles got me this for my birthday. we thought this c.d. was revelation, no joke. THE OFFSPRING, COME OUT AND PLAY.

My sister and I used to sing this shit all the time (pathetic I know). My dad got mad at us cause he said it was about drugs. Somehow everything was related to drugs. He also had an equation that drugs equaled murder. Whatever, I think it holds up. GREEN DAY- WHEN I COME AROUND.

My friend's big sister's boyfriend put us on to this shit. He also smoked and had a knife. Looking back he was in grade 10 and was probably pimply and as dorky as fuck. But shit, in grade 6 he scared the shit out of us and we thought he was the epitome of cool. Sawry for the lack of video. MISFITS, WHERE EAGLES DARE.

A reason for living. A deeper meaning.

As I write this I am in my room in the dark listening to Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush". I'm sipping on tall cans of juice and thinking about going out tonight. I'm really feeling it right now. Which roughly translates to me being embarrassed of a drunk post. That being said I'm just gonna avoid criticism by making a post themed on quasi embarrassing songs.

n.1. HOT CHIP. An synth pop band that are just weird and are getting enough hype. But that's not what's embarrassing, its the fact that I actually like this song because of the wrestling theme. As a kid I LOVED professional wrestling and I rarely admit this. The lyrics are cheesy. Cheesy lyrics are only cheesy if you want them to be. The song is called WRESTLING.

Next up is LIL WAYNE. An artist I blast a lot for being fucking stupid. Like deciding to be a crack dealer after 5 albums or wearin blue bandannas at one point and then deciding to be a blood. The song is called DONT TRIP. I actually like it apart from his disingenuous line saying he's "up in little haïti". I am more Haïtian than Lil Wayne and I am actually not kidding. That being said I straight up love this song.

Finally we have a terrible and terribly catchy song by THE WOMBATS called LETS DANCE TO JOY DIVISION. Which is about dancing to joy division. If you listen to the lyrics you will literally want to kill yourself. That being said I was driving alone late at night coming back from MTL and I actually sang along to the song while it played on the radio. Probably one of the lowest moments of my life. Fuck, I can't believe I am opening up like this to the internet world, revealing my darkest secrets.

i'm drunk.
