the time has come for bitter things
Whoa baby...... can you guys feel that? Can you friggin feel it? Tonight is Devil's Night!! Pre-Halloween bash! Originally a tradition in Michigan where kids would fuck shit up before Halloween and it escalated to pretty severe arson in Detroit in the 1980's. I think it's a beautiful thing and it leads into my favorite celebration of the year, HALLOWEEN! The last surviving pagan holiday. A day that youth has complete control on society. The last truly communal celebration/activity we have. Every year little kids and teens dress up like things that go bump in the night and go door to door asking for tribute in the form of candy. The adults go along with this much like people who implicitly accept organized crime in their community. For if you do not give the children what they want you may be victim to petty vandalism. GOD DAMN IS THAT NOT BEAUTIFUL? People making lanterns or bonfires in other parts of the world and why? Because the nights are getting longer and even with all our science and reason the darkness still speaks to a primal part of our souls. This is why we dress up as ghouls and goblins, we are trying to reclaim our fears. A night where everybody gets to be something they're not and play a character. There is nothing I like better than Halloween and the fact it has survived Christianity's assaults is a testament to our primary instincts as well the energy of our youth. The theme today is obvious.
The first is the obvious choice. THE MISFITS - HALLOWEEN. I always talk shit about how their only good album is Static Age yet here I post another non Static Age track (3 in a row now I have posted). Exceptions prove rules, OK? This song is beautiful and really encapsulates the vibe I'm trying to communicate. "This day anything goes". No official video but a nice little youtube made clip.
Next up I'm going to school you on a failed Hip Hop experiment. HORRORCORE. Def Jam tried to find the next big thing in Hip Hop. Trying to find ways to bridge more gaps between white and black youth culture they pushed horrorcore. A brand of hip hop that talked about the themes of many metal bands. The problem is that white kids generally will follow black kids when it comes to urban music and well, inner city kids don't need to make up stories to be scared of what lurks in the dark corners of their streets. Death being much more real in their communities they had no need to fantasize about it. Needless to say it was a flop. Still though kinda cool to dig on at this time of the year, I give you FLATLINERZ - SATANIC VERSES.
Next up is one of the most important bands in my life. THE CRAMPS. When I first saw them on YTV's the anti-gravity room they blew my mind. It got me way into punk and more adult comic books. I still think their music is up there in my top 20 favorite bands ever. One thing that makes me feel even cooler is that one of my heroes Ian McKaye saw them live back in 79 and it pushed him into punk! He also met the Bad Brains at that show! Anyways The Cramps coined the word psychobilly and most of their songs evoke b-movie horror. If one band could actually be from Rod Serling's The Twillight Zone it would be them. I give you I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF.
Next up is the most Halloween guy of all. What Morrissey is to sappy love and depression, DANZIG is to skeletons and Satan. A universally loved figure. He's got the voice of Frank Sinatra but singing about death. How can you NOT like that? His biggest ever single MOTHER.

give me something to break
Saturdays are funtimes. Deal with songs that were major funtimes for me as a chubby kid in my friend's garage.
if you listen real closely you can hear a bit of nirvana in this song. FOO FIGHTERS, BIG ME.
my friend charles got me this for my birthday. we thought this c.d. was revelation, no joke. THE OFFSPRING, COME OUT AND PLAY.
My sister and I used to sing this shit all the time (pathetic I know). My dad got mad at us cause he said it was about drugs. Somehow everything was related to drugs. He also had an equation that drugs equaled murder. Whatever, I think it holds up. GREEN DAY- WHEN I COME AROUND.
My friend's big sister's boyfriend put us on to this shit. He also smoked and had a knife. Looking back he was in grade 10 and was probably pimply and as dorky as fuck. But shit, in grade 6 he scared the shit out of us and we thought he was the epitome of cool. Sawry for the lack of video. MISFITS, WHERE EAGLES DARE.

Never could imagine there were only
Sorry to whoever cares that I haven't posted much of anything this week. Combination of lack of time and a little bit of a natural downer. I spoke with Korea-Myriam on the phone today. Always good speaking to someone who can call me out on my bullshit. She can sometime step out of bounds like when she laughed at me cause I said I'm into JOY DIVISION theses days... Fuck that shit is all I had to say about that. This is my current jam. Like I am fucking obsessed with this song. I listened to Closer in it's entirety before going to the bar on Saturday and DECADES just punched me in the face. My dream would be to see this covered by Buried Inside and stretched out to like 15 minutes. That and the idea that this is the last thing my blood brother Ian Curtis said to the world. Way heavy, but heavy in a good way.
Gonna double pack it and hit you with a live video of COLONY. One of the chunkier JD tracks. It still blows my mind that working class guys from shitty ass manchester came up with this amazing music.
One love.
BONUS. The new MATT AND KIM video. happy Thursday kids, and I really fucking mean it. Yesterday sucks and tomorrow is going to be hell so why not hold hands right now!

BRIGHTS - HEARTBREAKERS EP REVIEW
This is something new for Youth Anthems. I am going to try my hand at true rock journalism and review a record and why not start with something that is real close to home Ottawa's own BRIGHTS and their debut release HEARTBREAKERS.
Before I get into the album proper let's talk about my first experience with BRIGHTS. Summer of 2007. The Transit (who are probably my second favorite Ottawa band ever) are playing a true last show. I need closure for this band that was so important to me yet I did not buy a ticket in time before it sold out. Brights were playing their first show as the opener and one
of their members Ross was kind enough to sell me a ticket. SWEET, I get to see The Transit. Standing in the basement of endhits I think of my years in the Ottawa scene thinking of all the great and often underrated bands that truly influenced my life. I turn to a friend of mine (jayhu? hooligan?) and I say "wow, with Transit completely done Ottawa officially has no more good bands." It killed me to say this but the days of Course of Action, Miles Between Us and Roads to Shiloh seemed so far away. Brights are setting up and I'm like alright whatever gimme the transit. Their first song wasn't even done and I turn to that same friend and I say "I officially retract my previous statement, these guys rule". Now they have their first release out on burgeoning record label SQUARE UP and even in that basement I couldn't forsee this. Truly great songs recorded and packaged at a level that makes me think theses guys are making an honest attempt at making this band a success outside of the confines of the 613/819. One thing I like about this is that's it an EP 5 songs, no bullshit. No bullshit being the overall vibe I get from this band. "Emotional" punk has changed a lot in the past couple of years and it has grown into what I would consider to be a bloated and disgusting monster. Brights truly evoke a feeling of having lived this scene for years and still contributing because they have to not because it's cool. The days when emo was still an inside joke and the haircuts were stupid but not THAT stupid. Pretty much the good old days (if there is such a thing) for people in their early to mid twenties. There's a fine line between sounding honest and sounding cheesy as hell. Brights are firmly entrenched on the honest side of things which is what makes it rise above most bands in the genre. Key tracks to listen to are HOME and HEARTBREAKERS, luckily they are on their myspace .
Youth Anthems gives HEARTBREAKERS an 8 out of 10. If these kids really work at it I would expect big things.
you can and should buy the record at interpunk, endhits and surely a bunch of other places.

Would you lie would you remember
Not much going on these days apart from me being way pumped for the Habs starting out their season on a good foot. I really have high hopes pour le C-H this year. No ones got history like us, no ones got love like us!
Semi new stuff today.
I'm going to start you off with a FUCKED UP double pack. Fucked Up are one of my favorite hardcore bands today and I have already posted about them. Like I said before they are good at publicity but I truly believe that publicity or whatever is part of true art. Fucked Up really attack every aspect of being a band. Performance, recording, packaging, politics and personality. They used to be cool to like but now they are getting cool to hate. I think that's bullshit. I am normally the first guy to hate on shit but I just can't with them. They are putting out some of the coolest most mental records ever to come out of hardcore. Serious. The Chemistry of Common Life is going to go down as a classic. That being said they are sort of like a folk band in the sense they modify a lot of their songs for live performances. The first clip is the song TWICE BORN recently performed at MTV live canada. Crazy fucking performance. The best part though is my good friend JAYHU (aka jehu butcher of the omrides) is in this video. He's the guy wearing a blue and yellow tshirt with the # 95 on the back he also gets security out of the way so the kids can get into the washroom. I swear this guy is the best ever. One of the only people I can say with 100% certitude will be a lifer veteran in hardcore, shit he ALREADY is a vet.
Second video is from a 12h marathon they did in NYC the other day. Its a cover of BLITZKRIEG BOP with motherfucking MOBY on guitar.
Next we have a double pack of SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO. A band I don't really know that well but Paul G put me on to the other day. The song is HUSTLER pretty much one of the best videos ever. Oddly enough they made a new video for the song that came out his week. It's good but the old one is better due to babes getting all indigo girls like. I'm posting both so you can choose which one is the best. Youth Anthems: fair and balanced.

I know who I want to take me home
My birthday was last Thursday and I have to say I'm still sort of recovering. I had my birthday at a very small ultra english pub which has sweet ambiance and decor (haha). A whole bunch of my friends showed up and I was really fucking happy. Normally my birthday is a bust cause of Thanksgiving but this year I hit publicity hard. The bar was mostly filled with my crew and it warmed my heart. The creepy regulars were really happy to have excitement in their lives. One psycho old dude challenged me to a push up competition. So much fun. Biggest highlight really was my PARENTS COMING. Not only did they show but they stayed and drank! People bought me too many drinks and I started getting a bit slurry. Whatever it was my birthday. The saturday I went to a pretty fun hardcore show and a REALLY cool afterparty. Had some awesome conversations that went on till 6am and made some new friends (degrassi theme song style).
Today's theme = drugs.
Now I don't condone drug use and I know many people for whom it fuuuuuuuuuuuucked up their lives. I'm talking heroin overdoses here. That being said some music that came from people doing way too much drugs is sorta good and the videos are really out there. Let's start with COCAINE. The obvious choice here is RICK JAMES. Most people our age know him from the Chappelle's Show sketches. The video is GIVE IT TO ME BABY. This song is about a woman who doesn't want to have sex with Rick James because she's sleeping and he's coming back drunk as fuck from the bar. WTF! Also you can see that the Chappelle sketch is not at all embelishing how fucked up Rick James was. He can't contain himself he looks at directly at the camera as much as he does the girl in the video, total cokehead. Cocaine's one hell of a drug.
Next up is Marijuana. Probably the drug after alcohol which is most popular and influential amongst artists. Too many choices. I picked my favorite weed song BONZAÏON by LOCO LOCASS. A song about a mythical super strain of ganja. The part at the end when they say mêlé, mêlé (messed up, messed up) is soooooo good. This song needs to get remixed or mashed up hard.
Finally the video most affected by a drug. ECSTASY. This video might not show any real rave scenes but when I think back to 90's electronic music culture in all its ridiculousness this video really sums it up well . PRODIGY, OUT OF SPACE. In high school I met one of my best friends to this day Zachary "Truniversal God Allah" Chamberlain. He put me on to The Prodigy (notably their earlier stuff) which I love to this day. He also had an older sister who was bigtime into the rave scene and some little nuggets of coolness trickled down from her through zach to me. Always hated raver style but liked a lot of the music. This video is the one video you HAVE to watch. Great, messed up stuff. Ectasy is funny to laugh at but neeeeever to do!
BONUS
boy you know I had to hit you with more prodigy! NO GOOD (START THE DANCE)

feliz navidad bitches
yo today is my birthday. I'm not even going to post videos I'm going to post straight songs off of youtube. I'm going against my own rules cause its my god damned birthday. Hell, even went against my normal title rule. 10000000 points if you can figure out the link between all the titles (if i didn't tell you.). 24 years ago today at the Hôpitale Monfort my mother was a nurse working a shift when I was like "Nineteen-eighty somethin', kid I don't sweat the date My moms is late so I had to plan my escape out the skins, in this world of fly girls Tanqueray and Hennessy until I cold hurl Ten months in this gut, what the fuck I wish moms'd hurry up so I could get buck wild, juvenile rippin' mics and shit Vanier, Vanier, ready for the likes of this, uh" I burst out of that with wide shoulders that nearly made my mom bleed to death, the doctor takes me in his arms and the first thing I did on earth is piss on a grown man's face. My first moments were all about mischief. I hope that my last moments can be as bad ass.
first song is RESPECT by THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. I loosely quoted some of the lyrics in my first paragraph.
Next up is TTC, SUCE MOI SALE PUTE. A very raw song, about whores. I love it cause they say LIBERTINE in it woo.
Now we have YUNG JOC, BOOKOO. A song about the new orleans slang of the bastardization of the french word beaucoup
which means a lot. I know its Yung Joc but its actually reaaaallly good.
which means a lot. I know its Yung Joc but its actually reaaaallly good.
and finally, one of OL DIRTY BASTARDS best songs I CANT WAIT.
I would like to think that all these songs kind of evoke the general vibe of my birth.
Its not an accident that i'm Big Baby Campbell.

On a sentimental noose
Ok this post really hit me sideways. I was reading a great Ottawa blog OTTAWA EXPLOSION
and their most recent post introduced me to something mindblowingly awesome. BACK PORCH VIDEOS a cable access show from Michigan that ran during the 80s. They were live for 3 hours every week and played music videos, showcased live bands and played records. On top of that the entire staff was comprised of HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. Just seeing them go really makes me think of what I want Youth Anthems to be and evoke. Just a love of music and having fun all while being motivated by and maintaining the fire and vigor of youth. I have spoken to some friends about taking Youth Anthems to public access television and seeing this really amazes me. That being said they had a million dollar studio being backed by a famous DJ and they were around when video was just blowing up. Still though, one can dream. I think the concept of having a bunch of kids hang out and talk about stuff in an interactive setting and integrating listening to music and music videos could work. You know talking celebrity gossip, politics, cheesy issues like aids and sweet arguments about sports. MTV Canada's aftershow has the hanging out aspect now just merge that with the old school and I believe it would attract kids back to the television set. Have a live online chat at the same time and you're set. dreamjob!
Ok. I will play some videos from BACK PORCH TV that were made when they didn't have a video for the song. Starting with anti-racist Welsh skinhead band THE OPPRESSED with SKINHEAD GIRL. The hosts just seem to be having so much fun. I am thinking about shaving my head bald just to see how warped by skull really is and to truly appreciate the hugeness of my dome. I would have to wear suspenders just to not look like I have cancer.
Next up is THE MISFITS with ASTRO ZOMBIES you should already know what it is. One of their only non static age good songs. You can really feel the punk kid nostalgia oozing out of this clip. It makes me so sad/happy...
Finally we have a video that is CRUSHINGLY nostalgic for me. Because the song already makes me long for another time A NEW ENGLAND by BILLY BRAGG. That and the kids just seem so beautiful and lucky at this crossroads of their lives. Kinda like when you see the future C.E.O., the future convict, the future sad old lonely man in a an old highschool year book just going crazy and having fun together during a lunch time activity or chilling outside in the parking lot. A perfect moment frozen and preserved forever in photography after which the crashing waves of time will destroy those innocent hearts... sigh. Wow, I can't believe I wrote that. Fuck I'm a loser, haha. Enjoy the amazing song bitches!

A reason for living. A deeper meaning.
As I write this I am in my room in the dark listening to Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush". I'm sipping on tall cans of juice and thinking about going out tonight. I'm really feeling it right now. Which roughly translates to me being embarrassed of a drunk post. That being said I'm just gonna avoid criticism by making a post themed on quasi embarrassing songs.
n.1. HOT CHIP. An synth pop band that are just weird and are getting enough hype. But that's not what's embarrassing, its the fact that I actually like this song because of the wrestling theme. As a kid I LOVED professional wrestling and I rarely admit this. The lyrics are cheesy. Cheesy lyrics are only cheesy if you want them to be. The song is called WRESTLING.
Next up is LIL WAYNE. An artist I blast a lot for being fucking stupid. Like deciding to be a crack dealer after 5 albums or wearin blue bandannas at one point and then deciding to be a blood. The song is called DONT TRIP. I actually like it apart from his disingenuous line saying he's "up in little haïti". I am more Haïtian than Lil Wayne and I am actually not kidding. That being said I straight up love this song.
Finally we have a terrible and terribly catchy song by THE WOMBATS called LETS DANCE TO JOY DIVISION. Which is about dancing to joy division. If you listen to the lyrics you will literally want to kill yourself. That being said I was driving alone late at night coming back from MTL and I actually sang along to the song while it played on the radio. Probably one of the lowest moments of my life. Fuck, I can't believe I am opening up like this to the internet world, revealing my darkest secrets.
i'm drunk.

Always been told that I've got too much pride

I have good friend named Tim. He coined the word "ooooh" and is like Lex Luthor. All around good dude. The other day we were watching NFL football at his house and we were talking about stuff. Like how I loved his team's name in last year's fantasy league, CUTLER FEVER. Now Jay Cutler is a really good QB who plays for the Denver Broncos (tim's supposed team, although I am actively trying to convert him to my BUFFALO BILLS). As we were watching Jay Cutler on the sidelines sans helmet and tim's like "oooooooh he's got hair like you! punk hair! vegetarian hair!" And I was like yo, Jay Cutler rules and I'm happy to sort of look like him. This post is dedicated to all artsy sport fans aka the Jay Cutlers out there.
First musicvideo is pretty fucked up in the sense that it's NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK. Its fucked up that when you're a really young boy you like gay shit (as in homosexual, not bad). Like Michael Jackson I liked the New Kids in the late 80's. Probably why most pedophiles hit up little boys and not little girls, they like the same stuff. So yeah NKOTB's comeback. The reason I'm even bothering with this is cause I love the show Entourage and how that's supposed to be Mark Wahlberg's life. Well that would mean that Johnny Drama is actually Donnie Wahlberg. Seeing him get a moment to shine makes think of that episode where Johnny Drama goes on Jimmy Kimmel. That and Ne-Yo is an amazing singer songwriter. I present to you the worst song ever to be featured on my blog SINGLE by NKOTB.
Next video is another one from MALAJUBE. ETIENNE D'AOUT is my favorite song on their album Tromp L'Oeil and I am shocked I had no idea there was a video for it! Not only that but it's one of the best musicvideos I have EVER seen. Funerals are so heavy. I fucking hate them, this video/song combo is real cathartic though.
Next up is an artist I was 100% sure I was going to loathe, FINAL FANTASY. Mainly because of the name and cause he was Canadian but when I saw him live at the Bluesfest last year I was really blown away by his performance. He's got a new video which looks cool but the song isn't super good. So I included his cover of Mariah Carey's Fantasy.
BONUS SHIT.
Not even a song. Today I purchased my first album in years and it wasn't even music. I bought JEN KIRKMAN's stand up comedy on iTunes. Holy fuck. I am in love with her. She's my new celebri-crush. Watch her get drunk and talk about slavery.
